Rogie Falls: Salmon Leaping Season in the Highlands

Rogie Falls, near the village of Contin, is one of the Highlands’ most dramatic natural viewpoints — and right now it’s at its best. Late summer into early autumn is peak salmon‑leaping season, when Atlantic salmon battle their way upstream through the Black Water river. From the suspension bridge, you can watch them gather in the pools below before launching themselves up the cascades and fish ladder — a rare wildlife spectacle that draws visitors every year.

A Short, Scenic Walk The walk from the Forestry car park to the falls takes 10–15 minutes, following a well‑maintained woodland trail through Scots pine and birch forest. The suspension bridge offers the best vantage point, and the surrounding paths make it an easy, family‑friendly outing.

How Far Is Rogie Falls? Strathpeffer → Rogie Falls: around 10–15 minutes by car, making it an ideal quick trip from the spa village. Belladrum → Rogie Falls: approximately 30–35 minutes’ drive, a straightforward route via Beauly and Contin.

Best Time to Visit Salmon are typically seen from late August through October, with the most dramatic leaps often happening after rainfall when the river is in full flow. If you’re visiting the Highlands at this time of year, Rogie Falls is one of the easiest and most rewarding wildlife stops.

DRIVE

FROM INVERNESS Follow the A862 for approximately 9.3 miles Turn left onto A833 towards Kiltarlity for approximately 1 mile. Turn left towards Belladrum, at the Gate House. Approximately 0.5 miles on the right there is a white stone block - turn right here and your destination is the second house on the right. Ardmara - sign is on the gate.

BUS AND TRAIN

Bus services from Inverness to Beauly are primarily operated by Stagecoach North Scotland (Routes 28, 61, and others) and D&E Coaches (Route 307).Stagecoach: Runs regular, frequent services (often hourly to every two hours) departing from the Inverness Bus Station to Beauly and the journey takes about 30 minutes.D&E Coaches: Operates the 307 service from the Inverness Bus Station, with multiple trips a day. You ask to get off at the Gate House on the Belladrum turn off. Check their websites for up to date timetables.

Quick Alternative:If you prefer to travel by train, ScotRail operates a direct service from Inverness to Beauly, taking about 16 minutes. You could then get a taxi to Ardmara (10 minutes drive aproximately).

INVERNESS AIRPORT

40 minute drive aproximately. Follow the A96 to Inverness then the directions above.

CYCLISTS

Cyclists are always very welcome - we are planning to have the garage available for secure dry coverage for bikes next year.

From the splender of Glen Afric to Highland Cows and of course Loch Ness, the Highlands of Scotland has a lot to offer visitors.

Inverness Castle - Don't miss a trip to Inverness to see the Castle - located right in the city centre.  As the gateway to the Highlands, the castle offers a glimpse into life in the Highlands with fantastic views from the turret and a fabulous coffee shop.

Loch Ness - Whether you are monster hunting on the loch, visiting the haunting ruins of Urquhart Castle or just enjoying the sceanery, the Loch is must on every itinary.

Culloden Battlefield - (National Trust for Scotland) Take a step back in time with an imersive experience at the visitors centre, walk the battle field and learn about the Clans that fought there.

Cairngorms National Park  - There is so much to see and do here but a few highlight include:- Loch Morlich, the Loch Garten Osprey Centre Highland Wildlife Park and Rothiemurchus where there are walking trails, wildlife watching and outdoor activities. Also, the Aviemore Centre has shopping and Restaurants.

Beauly Priory - Just a short drive to the town and not only can you visit the Priory but there are lots of restaurants and shops to browse.

Food scene - Wild Gorse Kitchen is only  a 10 minute walk from Ardmara through Belladrum wood.  This beautiful dog friendly restaurant offers amazing vegan food for breakfast and lunch. I cannot reccommend a visit here highly enough. I love it!

The Mustard Seed Restaurant, sitting on the banks of the River Ness this converted church offers modern European cuisine focusing on fresh, seasonal and Scottish ingredients. It also has a rooftop terrace.
